Chapter 15
The moment the door slammed shut, he reached for his cell phone. He didn’t care that it was not yet seven o’clock in the morning or that he had no plan. He needed to do something, anything to keep moving. Even if he was only treading water. If he stopped, he’d drown.
Cian’s groggy voice came over the connection. “Yeah?”
“Can you meet me at Rory’s?”
Maybe it was the time of day, or maybe it was the edge of panic riding just below the surface of his voice, but Cian didn’t argue.
“When?” he asked.
“Now.”
After a beat, Cian groaned as though rolling out of bed. “On my way.”
Aiden disconnected, and as he scrolled through his call list, the sound of a shower running carried through the wall. He used the pad of his thumb to select the number.
Shea answered on the second ring. “Yeah?”
If it’d been almost any other moment in time, Aiden might’ve laughed at the similarities between Shea’s and Cian’s greetings.
“Hey. It’s me,” he said.
“So eight o’clock in the morning is a good time for you?” Sarcasm without a hint of sleepiness shaded Shea’s voice. “I’ll make a note.”
“Actually, it’s 7:00 a.m. where I am.”
“As a pub owner, I find this all very disturbing,” Shea said.
Despite himself, soft laughter rumbled in Aiden’s chest.
“What’s going on?” Shea asked.
Aiden slid off the coffee table and onto the edge of an overstuffed armchair. “Do I remember it right that you have a law degree?”
“That’s an alarming question to be asked at 7:00 a.m.” Shea said. “At 8:00 a.m. too, for that matter.”
“I’m not in jail, if that helps.”
“In that case, yes,” Shea said. “You remember right.”
“What kind of law did you practice?” Aiden hoped his tone sounded casual.
“I was a civil rights attorney.”
With a deflating twinge, Aiden scrubbed a hand over his face and reclined back in the chair.
Muffled sounds crackled through the phone speaker. “Not what you’re looking for?”
“I don’t need a lawyer. I was only curious.”
“Are we bonding? At eight o’clock in the morning?” Incredulity put a hitch in Shea’s voice. “Is that what this is?”
“Yeah,” Aiden muttered. “Something like that.”
“Then you should know I like to take long walks on the beach and read corporate law briefs in my spare time.”
Aiden sat upright in the chair. He’d already known Shea was a good business owner, but he was a corporate law junkie, too?
“I also like to travel,” Shea said. “I hear Chicago’s lovely this time of year.”
Aiden fumbled for a reply. “Uh… now’s not a good time.”
“Why not?”
“It’s complicated.”
“I get that. I do,” Shea said. “But you’re my brother. I want to know you.”
A stab of guilt pierced Aiden in the chest. “Work is busy. Maybe in a couple of months when things slow down.”
“I thought you were a bartender.”
“Only when I’m spying on my siblings who don’t know I exist.”
Shea made a noise like a grunt and a chuckle mashed together. “Fair enough. What do you do the rest of the time?”
While his mind churned, Aiden chewed the side of his thumb.
